So Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers. Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left." Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. Genesis 13:8-11

Abram Gives Lot First Choice Cartoon

Lot chose the best, Abraham chose what was better. We all want first dibs because second choice means second best. But Abraham displayed his true character by giving the first choice to Lot. Are we suprised that Lot chose the greenest richest land for his own, leaving the leftovers for Abraham? It was the natural thing to do. But the story doesn't end there. If you read a few chapters further in Genesis you will discover that Lot suffered for the choice he made and Abraham was blessed. Grabbing the best and the most, even when it is at our fingertips, is not always the wisest thing to do. When faced with choices the best isn't always better.
